Ireland will be blocking a free trade deal between the European Union (EU) and South American Mercosur bloc, unless Brazil follows immediate action to protect the Amazon rainforest from forest fires, according to foreign reports.

In a statement, Irish Prime Minister Leo Vardakar was quoted making the above comments on Friday (23).

Varadkar was very concerned at the record levels of rainforest destruction, according to a report by Irish Independent.

"There is no way that Ireland will vote for the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement if Brazil does not honor its environmental commitments," he said.
