South Africans mourn over ex-footballer killed in Johannesburg

The recent assassination of former South African footballer, Mark Batchelor was outburst on social media, mourning at his loss. 

Batchelor was killed on Monday (15) evening by gunshot near his home in Johannesburg.

The local media outlets reported that the shooting was likely committed by a professional shooter given the magnitude to the arrangements, adding that a murder was being investigated. 

Mark Batchelor played for some of the country’s top clubs, including Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. 

He was also known for playing for the Bafana Bafana National Team, at a point in his career. 

According to local police, he was shot through the window several times at a perfect hit and died in the scene. 

The motive behind the killing is yet to be discovered at this point, as nothing was taken from his possession, according to police.

A thorough investigation will be followed in revealing the murderer, one police officer said. 

There are unconfirmed reports indicating that the deceased footballer was shot at a closer range, seven times. 

Batchelor's sudden death was mourned by former colleagues and the country's public, praising his commitment to football, while others bemoaned the chaotic security situation of South Africa that allowed for such crimes.
