A group of Opposition parliamentarians have reportedly signed the petition seeking the Presidential Pardon for Duminda Silva, who was convicted for the murder of Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, tabled by a group of Ruling Party parliamentarians.

These Opposition MPs are reportedly five members of the Tamil Progressive Alliance led by Mano Ganeshan, who are known allies to Samagi Jana Balawegaya.

Party Leader Ganeshan, Deputy Leader Palani Digambaram, MPs Velusami Radhakrishnan, Mayilvanagam Udayakumar and Aravind Kumar have signed the petition seeking pardon for Silva, and party member Kandy district MP Velukumara has not signed it, according to sources.

Upon being exposed to media about the action, Ganeshan had made a remark in social media, later to be deleted immediately in the face of strong offensive comments. Ganeshan in his deleted statement had said that Silva was drunk at the time of the incident, and he should be given a chance to correct his mistakes given that youths of that age commit such wrongdoings and he was in prison for five years.

Responding to a query by a journalist, Digambaram has confirmed the event, revealing that he had signed the petition and he had also provided facts to justify his action.
