Appointing new chairpersons to both SLRC and ITN, media minister Mangala Samaraweera asked that correct information with regard to the government’s development programmes be transmitted to the people. He said he did not expect them to be mouthpieces of the government, as they had been during the previous regime.
Now, both chairpersons have assumed duties, and one particular minister has become quite a headache for both of them. He is housing and construction minister Sajith Premadasa, who gives them calls even in the middle of the night. He has advised them to highlight him when carrying news with regard to development work by his ministry.

“Do not show the work much. Show me more. People want to see me. I will be the leader of the party next. I have the public attraction. So, highlight me.”

Due to his behaviour, both chairpersons are in a difficult satiation.

Sajith is that much obsessed with becoming the UNP leader and the country, and believes he has a big public attraction. That is not surprising, because he is the son of Ranasinghe Premadasa.

This brings to mind something that happened in the 1990s.

Leftist leader Vasudeva Nanayakkara told this story to the House, which is in hansard. It says that Vasu used to visit a colleague to watch news on television. From the commencement of the news, the dog in the house was seen going before the TV set, wagging its tail and run away from time to time.

After watching this happen several times, Vasu inquired about the reason for the dog’s behaviour. His leftist colleague replied, “It’s our dog. Comrade, do you know, I address him as Srimath. So, whenever, the word Srimath is uttered in TV, the dog goes in front of it and wags its tail.”
