The Sri Lanka Navy yesterday (4) commenced another coral reef restoration project in the Northern Naval Command.
This project was initiated under the directives of Navy Commander Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva.
This coral reef restoration project took place off the shores of Kankasanthurei, and it aims at conserving coral reefs which are subject to continued destruction due to various reasons.
Naval personnel had planted 11 reef balls with replanted corals at its initial stage.
The project was closely monitored by Commander Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Kapila Samaraweera, and the Navy will carry out regular monitoring of the project in order to ensure continual growth of the coral nursery, Sri Lanka Navy said.
Working hand in hand with the Navy’s Green and Blue concept (Neela Harith Sangramaya), a number of coral reef restoration projects have been initiated in a number of beach areas across the island.
