Political Consultations between Sri Lanka and Kingdom Bahrain

The First Session of Political Consultations between Sri Lanka and Bahrain were held by virtual platform today (21 October 2021). The MOU on Political Consultations was signed between the two countries in 2009 with a view to further developing bilateral relations and exchange views on regional and international issues of common interest.

The delegations deliberated on further developing the existing relations to new avenues of cooperation. The meeting identified several areas including trade, investment, manpower, education, culture, tourism, health, agriculture, skill development, and vocational training for mutual benefit. Further, the meeting proposed to enter into new bilateral agreements and to revisit the signed agreements to formalize such cooperation in the identified areas.

The Bahrain delegation briefed about the contributions of the Sri Lankan migrant workers and their commitment to the welfare and free vaccination of Sri Lankan Migrant workers in Bahrain. Foreign Secretary of Sri Lanka Prof. Jayanath Colombage thanked and appreciated the Bahrain Government for their kind gesture of facilitating the Sri Lankan migrant workers with free vaccination and mentioned that Sri Lanka is willing to explore employment opportunities in Bahrain for the skilled and semi-skilled Sri Lankans.

The Sri Lankan delegation was led by Foreign Secretary Admiral Prof. Jayanath Colombage and the Bahrain side was led by Undersecretary (Political Affairs) of the Bahrain Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Ali Khalifa.

The Bahrain delegation included Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to Sri Lanka Abdulrahman Mohammed Al-Qaoud, residing in New DelhiHead of Afro-Asian Affairs Sector Ambassador Fatima Abdulla Al-Dhan, First Secretary of Afro-Asian Affairs Sector Fahad Mohammed Al-Faihani and officials from the Bahrain Ministry of Foreign Affairs while the Sri Lankan delegation included Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Bahrain Pradeepa Saram and senior officials from the Foreign Ministry.

 The Second Session of the Political consultation between Sri Lanka and Bahrain will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2022.
