The farmer who used to go to the farm has to go to Court today due to the government's conduct, Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadsa said, following his visit to the Tissamaharama Beralihela Farmers' Mung Bean Cultivation area as the second step of the 'Govi Hadagesma' (Pulse of the Farmer) visiting undertaken by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) to address the problems faced by the farmers community in Sri Lanka.
The Opposition Leader engaged in extensive discussions with the farmers of the area on a number of issues, especially the lack of a proper market for their production, the shortage of fertiliser and seends, the problems with harvesting methods, and the breeding of caterpillars similar to Sena-Catapillar on Mung crops.
Today the government has completely disregarded the farmers community, the Opposition Leader pointed out. The situation of farmers cultivating additional crops has also reached into a critical stage, he added, warning that the government will be responsible, should famine arise in the country.
