The government's recent move on suspending the importation of certain goods is a fulfillment of promises made during the last election, Minister S.M. Chandrasena said, speaking to a briefing held in the SLPP Headquarters today (14).

The people's mandate was given to the government's aim of creating a productive economy, Chandrasena went on, adding that the government, accordingly, is aiming to suspend the import of all products which can be locally manufactured. The country cannot move forward without manufacturing everything that can be produced locally.

Accordingly, the importation of 129 types of goods has been suspended, he added.

The government is spending a large sum of money to control the Covid-19 pandemic and the suspension of imports will save money to be spent for the anti-Covid operations, Chandrasena suggested.

Denying the allegation that the State of Emergency was imposed to repress the people, the Minister added that the sole purpose of imposing the State of Emergency was to defeat the trade mafia and enable the consumers to purchase essential commodities without meeting any shortage.
