The majority of Covid infections recently discovered in Sri lanka could be of the delta variant of the virus, experts at the University of Sri Jayawardenapura, who are conducting research on Covid strains, warned.

There is an increase in the number of cases with symptoms and of critical condition, especially those of respiratory diseases, the experts revealed, adding that it was currently reported that the daily oxygen consumption in the country has exceeded 45,000 litres.

According to Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, a study is being conducted to determine whether there is a complication of the variants spread in Sri Lanka. The University of Sri Jayawardenapura has the capacity and resources to identify any virus strain through genetic analysis and it may be possible by this weekend to provide specific information to the health authorities about the variants of the Covid virus currently prevalent in the country, he added.

Despite the nature of the strains, it is mandatory that the public is adhered to the health guidelines, Dr. Jeewandara emphasised.
