The Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa states that he is very willing to reduce fuel prices and provide relief to the people. However, the Minister said that it is not easy to move the price of fuel in the local market as it is a dollar transaction with the international market.
During a discussion held at the Ministry of Finance, Basil Rajapaksa has stated that fuel prices cannot be reduced in a manner that they reduce the prices of locally produced rice and coconuts. Basil Rajapaksa has stated the above in response to a query made by journalists in this regard.
Before Basil Rajapaksa was sworn in as the Minister of Finance, backbenchers of the SLPP stated that action would be taken to reduce fuel prices after Basil Rajapaksa was sworn in. However, fuel prices have not been reduced so far.
The Minister of Finance has also commented on the efficiency of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation and says that more than 6000 employees are employed in the Corporation. He also said that OPEC, which controls oil prices worldwide, has only about 300 employees.
