The no confidence motion tabled by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) against Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila over the fuel price hike is due to be taken up for debate in Parliament today (19). The motion was moved by SJB MP S.M. Marikkar and seconded by MP Kabir Hashim.

However, Foreign Minister and Leader of House Dinesh Gunawardena raising a point of order stated that although Marikkar had moved the motion for debate, a no-confidence motion was not moved, thereby suggesting that there is no no-confidence motion to be seconded for debate.

The Speaker allowed Marikkar to move the no-confidence motion against Gammanpila, which, however, was strongly objected by the Ruling Party. Ministers Wimal Weerawansa and Prasanna Ranatunga raising point of orders suggested that a single MP cannot be given the opportunity twice.

The dialogue has led to a heated argument between the Ruling Party and the Opposition, but Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa calmed down the situation, thereby allowing the Opposition MP to table the Motion.
