Letter to the Director General of Information on Sexual Violence Against Women in Mass Media

The Sri Lanka Young Journalists Association has divulged information on sexual harassment faced by women in the filed of Mass Media, in a letter addressed to the Director General of Information of the Department of Government Information.

Upon endless speculations surfaced on Social Media about alleged sexual harassment targeting women of Mass Media, the Sri Lanka Young Journalists Association points out that the conversation only focused on the women of English journalism, adding that such sexual harassment is also targeting women of Sinhala and Tamil journalism working in Media institutes for a long time.

Women of media are subject to sexual harassment not only from the editors and owners of such media bodies but also from men journalists, it emphasised.

Sexual harassment has taken place by intimidating women apprentices, especially those working witin an institutional structure, it added, urging the Information Department for an immediate action to be taken in this regard.
