Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed the officials to take the necessary measures to ban lunch sheets of all forms.
Around 10 million lunch sheets are dumped into the environment on a daily basis, causing a great deal of environmental damage, the Minister pointed out, adding that although the material decomposes in two years, scientists have confirmed that the microplastics that accumulate in the soil could retain for more than 200 years.
Earlier in 2016, former President Maithripala Sirisena decided to ban lunch sheets in his capacity as the Environment Minister. The gazette notification issued in this regard, however, was not enforced.
Amaraweera added that the action to ban lunch sheets will be taken through the enforcement of the gazette.
