Adapting a mechanism to deliver liquor that does not exist for distributing vegetables, pensions and medicines is rather shameful, emphasised Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA), speaking to media in Colombo today (16).
Condemning the decision to deliver liquor, the Union said that the move is a conspiracy, urging all parties, including the clergy, to stand against it.
Union Executive Committee member Dr. Prasad Colombage said that this could also increase domestic violence, pointing out that the implementation of such a decision would cause great inconvenience to the public, including the health and security sectors.
The impact on the health sector at the moment with the Covid crisis situation is quite obvious, he went on, adding that the health sector is also being affected by the diseases that can be caused by liquor.
In the event that about fifty fatalities and many infections are reported on a daily basis due to the pandemic and the immunity among people is a necessity at this point, prioritising substance that weakens immunity would be regrettable, Dr. Colombage noted.
