As of yesterday (11) the loss incurred to the Department of Railway amidst the travel restrictions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic amounts to Rs. 460 million covering 21 days, Railway General Manager W.A.D.S. Gunasinghe revealed.
The Railway Department earns a daily income of over Rs. 20 million with about 350 railway operations per day and the above loss incurred in the period of May 21 - June 11, according to Gunasinghe.
The Railway General Manager further stated that the loss was due to the non-operation of trains due to the pandemic situation and that the salaries of the employees are being paid despite the losses.
