The Sri Lanka Air Force is in the process of purchasing four Russian-made MI 17 helicopters. It is reported that the necessary funds will be provided by the Russian government. These loans are provided at a minimum interest rate under the military loan facility.
The helicopters are being purchased for use in UN peacekeeping operations and the Air Force plans to use the proceeds from the deployment of Air Force personnel to UN peacekeeping operations to repay loans.
At present 06 Air Force MI 17 helicopters are being used for peacekeeping operations.
