The National Blood Transfusion Service is reportedly in deep crisis due to the corona epidemic. Dr. Lakshman Edirisinghe, Director of the National Blood Transfusion Service says that the number of blood vessels in his institution is gradually declining.
Speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday (04) Lakshman Edirisinghe stated that there is a shortage of blood donors due to the Kovid epidemic and the restrictions imposed on blood circulation.
The doctor says that there is a need for about 1200 blood units daily. He says that at least 800 units of blood should be received daily but at present the amount of blood received daily has decreased.
Edirisinghe also points out that a severe crisis could arise if travel restrictions have to be imposed across the country in the future.
Therefore, Lakshman Edirisinghe urges blood donors to assist in maintaining adequate blood reserves. Edirisinghe says that blood can be donated by visiting the National Blood Transfusion Center in Narahenpita, Colombo or at the blood donation centers located at the regional level.
He also says that it is possible to make an appointment to donate blood through hotlines.
