Dengue fever to rise - infection resembling Dengue spreads among children

Dengue is spreading across the country once again amid the Covid-19 pandemic, revealed health officials. As per the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, 6389 dengue cases have been reported during the last four months of 2021.

Accordingly, 1496 cases in January, 1794 cases in February, 849 cases in March and 1320 in April have been reported.

Although the highest figures of dengue cases were frequent in Western Province including Colombo City in the recent past, the highest number of cases this year was reported from Batticaloa District, marking 2686 cases.  

In addition 939 cases were reported from Colombo District, 471 from Gampaha District and 368 from Kurunegala District.

Meanwhile, a viral infection resembling Dengue - namely Hands, Foot, Mouth Disease - is spread among children, medical professionals revealed.

Children who have contracted the infection sustain symptoms of red blisters on the hands, feet, and mouth, and fever, cough, and body aches.

The infection is easily spread and children with symptoms are urged to consult medical treatment immediately, said Dr. Deepal Perera, Paediatrician.
