Sudewa Hettiarachchi to be appointed as Director General of President’s Media?

In the event that Mohan Samaranayake, a senior journalist who was the Director General of President's Media, was recently appointed as the Director of Government Information, the President has decided to appoint Sudewa Hettiarachchi, a veteran journalist, to fill the post left vacant upon Samaranayake's departure, sources said.

Accordingly, Hettiarachchi is due to be appointed as the new Director General of President's Media.

Hettiarachchi currently serves as the Chief Executive of EAP owned by Ali Subhashkaran, earning an income of about Rs. 3.5 million.

Why leaving a job worth Rs. 3.5 million to another worth only Rs. 100,000?

Meanwhile, colleagues in the media field have begun to express their surprise over Hettiarachchi's new appointment, as to why incurring such an economic loss, despite vehicle and fuel allowances, by submitting to the post of Director General of the President's Media would be necessary.

However, sources tell that the process is being carried out under the blessings of the top management of EAP group, mainly because there is an attempt to use Hettiarachchi's position to alleviate the current conflicts over the ownership of the company.

A responsibility for Sudewa!

When Subhashkaran took over the EAP Media Network, the nationalist factions representing the Joint Opposition at the time had condemned him, even on one occasion calling him an agent of the LTTE organisation. The issue regarding the company's ownership is not over yet and the government authorities have informed the relevant ministry officials not to interfere in the transition.

Accordingly, sources claim that EAP has taken the responsibility on not incurring any enconomic losses to Hettiarachchi, despite his decisition to drop himself from the post to be appointed to the post of Director General of the President's Media for a lesser pay package.

They also viewed that Hettiarachchi would be involving in solving the ownership crisis at the company.

The EAP top management has also decided not to appoint any other person to the post of Chief Executive, the job formally carried out by Hettiarachchi, sources added.
