Huawei continues to attract cream of best ICT talents across countries

01.04.2021: Huawei’s a global leader in providing ICT solutions has increased company’s total workforce by attracting nearly 3,000 new employees from 194,000 to 197,000 last year, the recently released Annual Report 2020 reveals. Company has increased the recruitment of talented youth across countries Huawei operates despite challenges experienced by COVID-19.

Ren Zhengfei the founder and CEO of Huawei went on public record stating that they will be recruiting 20-30 talented youth from around the world this year from each country they operate. He further stated that they wish to recruit 200-300 from around the world by 2022 in total.

"These talented young people are like "loachs", drilling into our organization, activating our team," he said recently speaking to media. Currently Huawei is operating in more than 170 countries and regions, serving more than three billion people around the world.

Huawei believes there are three major challenges facing the supply and distribution of talent in the ICT industry. Whilst there is a huge gap between the overall supply and demand of talent, the rapid development of the ICT industry is set to further widen this gap. There is a mismatch between talent quality and interdisciplinary industry demand. As the ICT industry develops, the supply chain segmentation continues to reshape the structural demand for talent. Instead of professionals who specialize in a single area, various types of ICT talent with diverse skill sets are needed. ICT companies are no longer satisfied with employees who can complete a task that may appear within a single skillset. They are looking for talent with comprehensive knowledge across multiple domains such as technology, product, marketing, business, and collaboration. However, there is currently a shortage of versatile talent who combine application capabilities, innovative competence, and an awareness of the importance of ICT.

The digital transformation in the new ICT era is impossible to achieve with any single technology according to Huawei. Based on the experience gained in the industry, Huawei will enable ICT talent to meet industry demands for innovation and interdisciplinary skillsets in the coming era.

Talents are the most treasured resource for a country’s sustainable development, and digital skills are an essential part of a country’s development strategies.

According to Huawei in Sri Lanka, company has been operating for over 20 years with integrated solutions across four key domains – telecom networks, IT, smart devices and cloud services and has extensive and in-depth cooperation with local mainstream telecom operators, government, and industry customers. Over the years, Huawei has continuously promoted the development of the ICT talent ecosystem in Sri Lanka through a number of activities.

One such initiative is launching Huawei’s technology transfer program for future generation’s talent pool via flagship CSR programme ‘Seeds for the Future’ in 2016 and continuing with programme for over 6 years in a row. Further Huawei entered into new initiatives in 2020 to build up digital skills and to deepen the long lasting collaboration with local ecosystem and partners to cultivate ICT talent for the development of the country.

The Seeds for the Future programme give access to knowledge on the ICT industry for tertiary students from universities from countries that Huawei operates.

The program seeks to develop local ICT talent, enhance knowledge transfer, promote a greater understanding and interest in the telecommunications sector, and improve and encourage regional building and participation in the digital community. The programme further delivers them insight on ICT industries and Huawei’s latest technologies. In last year 16 students representing from 10 universities from 5 provinces had been selected for this programme from Sri Lanka. In last 6 years a total 56 young ICT talents from Sri Lanka had benefited from Huawei Seeds for the Future and experience in Huawei headquarters in Shenzhen, China.

Although the world is fast becoming digital, the gulf between ICT job vacancies and the number of engineers that can fill them is widening. By 2025, 85% of business applications will be cloud-based and 97% of large companies will use AI. However, there won’t be enough qualified engineers to operate these technologies if we don’t start taking action now. This is where Huawei ICT Academy comes in. Huawei has teamed up with universities from around the world to bridge the talent gap and close the distance between ICT theory and application. ICT Academy provides students with hands-on training in the latest technologies, imbuing them with the foundation to become next-generation innovators. The academy provides budding ICT professionals with comprehensive study materials and access to the latest Huawei technologies.

Following this initiative Huawei Sri Lanka in cooperation with Moratuwa University, the best university of science and technology in the country, singed and MoU to establish a joint innovation laboratory and ICT Academy, aiming to develop high-quality information and communication technology talent and skills among youth generations in Sri Lanka to meet the ever changing future talent demands and challenges of the industry.

On the other hand Huawei in Sri Lanka provides various career development channels for local employees. Through managerial job training, one-to-one mentor system and other methods, local employees are given more responsibilities and accelerating opportunities for their career development. For three consecutive years from 2017 to 2019, Huawei Sri Lanka was rated as a ‘Great Place to Work’ in Sri Lanka by the global research, consulting and training firm Great Place to Work. As a global multinational organization Huawei continue to improve the ability and competitiveness of Sri Lankan employees through employee empowerment plans, project management and development plans, along with more than 20,000 online/offline training courses.

Company has cultivate the talents and skills of potential local managers and have successfully implemented a Financial Leadership Development Programme (FLDP) for them. In 2017, Huawei Sri Lanka launched a one-to-one mentorship program. The Sri Lankan management team members will pass on their work knowledge to potential local managers through formal and informal channels to help them better adapt to management positions and improve management skills in the organization.

Since March 2020, amidst the Pandemic Corvid19 outbreak in Sri Lanka, which tested greatly the country’s public healthcare system, emerging digital technologies have been already integrated into all aspects of fighting against the pandemic and are playing a great value. Huawei works closely with operators and government institutions to use cutting-edge ICT technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and big data to help Sri Lanka to fight against the pandemic.

As a responsible caring corporate citizen during the Pandemic outbreak, in conjunction with the local operator Dialog, Huawei donated 30 telemedicine consultation systems to first-line hospitals, and collaborated with medical experts from all over the country to discuss medical cases through video conferences, monitor and share patient health data in real time, and conduct occupational health education. Further a total of 10 sets of high-definition video conferencing systems and 6 high-precision thermal imaging cameras have been donated to the Government of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka by Huawei. And the technology is used by government departments to improve the efficiency of remote decision-making while reducing personnel contact.

Huawei actively donated financial aid through a batch of urgently needed medical supplies to the first-line medical workers in the country, including 10,000 medical masks, 200 sets of medical protective clothing, 100 goggles, and 150 liters of hand sanitizer to fight against the pandemic to the government of Sri Lanka.


Huawei’s Harmony Operating System

The recently concluded Annual Report release event further highlighted that Huawei has also decided to release HarmonyOS on 300 million devices this year. They have released a timetable according to the version-vice progress. Harmony OS is an IoT-oriented OS, rather than a mere mobile phone OS. Mobile phones are just a subcategory of IoT devices. Harmony OS 's primary purpose is to empower various devices of different sizes. You can think of device OSs as languages. When devices speak the same language, they can communicate easily. It is Huawei’s objective in releasing HarmonyOS to flexibly deploy one OS on various IOT devices so that they would all speak a ‘common language’.

Being technologically innovative, Huawei will also introduce new smart watches, Huawei Vision TVs, head units, and tablets that support HarmonyOS in 2021. Huawei will also be bringing 5.5G and 6G technologies for their devices with the support of the Strategy Office of Huawei Wireless Network.

It does not condition itself to the mere idea of building cars so the public could ride them, but focuses on ICT technologies and supplying incremental components for smart vehicles. Huawei will merge technology and transportation in a manner by which transportation is made easier. In the era of smart vehicles, the requirement of transportation is gradually being shifted from the mechanical attributes of vehicles to that of intelligence and electrification, at a more cost reduced and efficiency improved approach, where Huawei intervenes, committing itself to build bridges between man and technology.

Carrier Market:

1.    Supported the stable operation of over 1500 carrier networks across more than 170 countries and regions.

2.    Multiple third-party test reports on 5G network experience in large cities ranked Huawei’s 5G networks top.

3.    The FDD Massive MIMO solution was deployed by more than 50 carriers around the world, maximising capacity gains.

Huawei developed a set of comprehensive solutions for the transportation sector that pave the way for the digital transformation of six industry verticals: smart aviation, smart urban rail, smart highways, smart logistics, smart railways, and smart ports. In aviation, Huawei served more than 100 airports across more than 40 countries and regions. In rail transport, Huawei's smart urban rail solution served over 200 urban rail lines in more 70 cities worldwide.

Contribution to Higher Education 

Huawei helped more than 2,600 universities and research institutes in more than 70 countries and regions explore the unknown; basic education: The Company actively promoted digital transformation worldwide and provided education cloud platform services for elementary and secondary schools, based on HUAWEI CLOUD, which benefited over 50 million students who could not attend school due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.


Huawei helped over 1,500 hospitals in countries including Sri Lanka, China, Turkey, Indonesia, and Germany increase their use of digital technology and provide smart healthcare services.

Internet, Intelligent Campuses and Data Centres

The Company provided Internet connectivity, data centre infrastructure, and HUAWEI CLOUD solutions to over 2,100 Internet companies worldwide thus served more than 500 customers across numerous sectors such as government, energy, manufacturing, real estate, and logistics, helping their campuses achieve all-scenario intelligence. 

Huawei established data centre infrastructures adopted by more than 12,000 customers globally in industries including government, finance, energy and transportation, helping customers upgrade to intelligent business systems.  

Long-awaited 5.5G and 6G not so far away!

Compared with 3G and 4G, 5G is developing at an unprecedented speed in terms of network construction and user development. Over 110 commercial 5G networks have been deployed worldwide to date, with over 800,000 5G sites, and 700,000 sites in China. According to Huawei Strategy Office data, only 9 networks and 20,000 sites have been deployed in the 3G era, and only 19 networks have been deployed in the 4G era, covering 140,000 sites. 5G smartphone shipments account for more than 60%. In just one year, the number of 5G users worldwide has exceeded 200 million, compared with 320,000 and 400,000 in the 3G and 4G eras, respectively, data revealed.

From the perspective of applications, 5G new services are developing rapidly. For thousands of industries (2B), Huawei has worked with carriers and partners to explore 5G applications in dozens of vertical industries, including but not limited to smart connected cars, smart factories, smart healthcare, smart grids, smart education, urban security, drones, smart agriculture, and smart new media. With the global deployment of 5G networks and the participation of more partners, industry applications of 5G will become increasingly clear.

The long-awaited 5.5G technology standards are currently being promoted by Huawei, leading to mobile communications innovation. With the emergence of more diverse IoT scenarios, the three scenarios defined by 5G cannot be supported. For example, industrial IoT applications require massive connections and large uplink bandwidth. Other applications require ultra-broadband, low latency, and high reliability. The last scenario is a universal capability set. To meet future user and industry requirements, Huawei released the definition of 5.5G to move from the Internet of Everything to the Intelligent Connection of Everything. Huawei will continue to invest resources in 5.5G, continue to innovate and promote 5.5G standards and industry ecosystems.
