Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa on Friday (05) joined an observation tour into Bellanwila - Attidiya Sanctuary which is under the declaration of the Urban Development Authority as an educational and conservation zone since 1980, later designated to the Catalog of 947 important wetlands in Asia under the provisions of the Ramsar Convention in 1989.
In the rechristening of Samagi Jana Balawegaya as a Green Political Party, the eco-friendly policy will be implemented more than ever, Opposition Leader Premadasa said, adding that he is committed to protecting the environment with his life.
Bellanwila - Attidiya Sanctuary is an observation location for many species of birds and Tytler's Swallow, a sub speicies of Common Swallow, was first discovered in Sri Lanka at the Sanctuary.
As of the beginning of the 90s, 168 speices of birds were discovered in Bellanwila - Attidiya Sanctuary. Among them were Lorikeet, Small Barbet and Brown-capped Babbler. The lives of these species are endangered in the event that eco-damage is being committed by humans around the area.
It is estimated that about 48% of bird species discovered in this location have been decimated due to human activity.
