The remarks made by Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa regarding the imprisonment of MP Ranjan Ramanayake took a blast in Parliament today (23), as he pointed out that the MP's parliamentary privileges should be protected.
In the event that Ramanayake is still a member of Parliament, he is still entitled to his parliamentary privileges, Premadasa noted, adding that although requests have been made to the Speaker on several occasions to bring Ramanayake to Parliament, no response has been received to date.
The Ruling Party, however, clapped back at the Opposition Leader by commenting that he should not be given the opportunity to waste time of House by speaking of Ramanayake.
In response, Premadasa added that there is a risk of losing Ramanayake's parliament membership in the event that he is not allowed to attend the sittings.
He went on saying that the MP's life is also in danger in his stay in Prison among convicts imprisoned over drug charges, due to the fact he had disclosed the identities of a number of drug dealers, swindlers and thieves, urging that Ramanayake should be transferred to Welikada Prison.
