Former Director of the CID Shani Abeysekera, who is in remand custody, and being diagnosed with the corona virus has been sent to the Gallella Treatment Center in Habarana yesterday afternoon.
According to his lawyers and family members, Shani Abeysekera was not admitted to a hospital but was referred to a treatment center outside Colombo even though he was suffering from a chronic illness.
Also, no information has been given to the family members about Shani Abeysekara's health condition to the family members and they too have been informed through media reports.
Upon learning that Abeysekera was infected with the covid 19 virus, his lawyers requested the Commissioner General of Prisons to admit him to the IDH Hospital in Colombo or to a hospital in Colombo that treats covid infected patients.
However, lawyers and family members say that the request has not been considered yet.
The Human Rights Commission has also written to the Commissioner General of Prisons regarding the situation of Shani Abeysekera and asked him to ensure the safety of life as well as health. The letter also states that he should be admitted to the nearest hospital and referred for treatment.
The family members emphasize that in such a situation where such requests have been made, it is doubtful about his survival in dealing with his current condition without even informing the next of kin.
