Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa questioned in Parliament regarding the decision to remove the forest systems designated for conservation as 'Remnant Forests' under Circular No. 05/2001 of the Ministry of Forest Conservation and Environment from the Department of Forest Conservation.
These forest systems are of great value to the biodiversity and host a number of eco systems - from large forests to small sensitive eco locations - at an area of thousands of acres, the Opposition Leader pointed out.
Reservoirs, a number of water-feeding areas and many sites of historical and archaeological value are found in this remnant habitat, Premadasa noted.
