The present regime is at an attempt of making others believe in a lie in Goebbels' Theory, but sooner of later the truth would come out, said Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa.
The Opposition Leader made this observation speaking to reporters after paying homage to Chief Prelate of Sri Lanka Amarapura Order Agghamaha Pandit Most Venerable Kotugoda Dhammawasa Thero at Dharmapalarama, Mount Lavinia this (18) evening.
Spellbound by the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, the present regime's interest on the Covid-19 crisis before the election has been thrown under in the present, he emphasised.
The government pays less attention to the essential needs of the public in the face of the catastrophic events arisen in the country, whilst catering to the 20A, Premadasa alleged, thereby expressing his displeasure.
Two days ago, the Opposition Leader in a press release urged the government to immediately provide relief to those who are oppressed by the Covid-19 pandemic. In the event that the government made arrangements to provide a concession of Rs. 5000 to the citizens of Gampaha district, Premadasa questioned whether the government does exactly what he predicted.
"When the staff members of the health sector who had accompanied the infected were being taken for quarantine, we told the government in Parliament that they should be quarantined separately, which they had to do in the very evening. When those who were infected and not infected were being transported in the same vehicle, we, amidst interruptions, urged the government in Parliament not to do it. They had to do it in the very evening. We, on the 15th of this month, made a special revelation that people who are vulnerable amidst the Covid-19 crisis are not even given the Rs. 5000 relief to collect the essential food items. Today, a text message came up revealing that some relief would be given to a part," he said.
Being stuck with the 20A, the government has failed to respond to the issues of people during the crisis, Premadasa went on, adding that they will be working together to defeat the new constitutional adaptation with the number of MPs on their side.
Responding to a query by a reporter as to what would be the Opposition Leader's opinion on the President's stance that the Easter Sunday attack was a result of the shortcomings of the 19th Amendment, Mr. Premadasa emphasised that there is no connection whatsoever between the 19th Amendment and the Easter Sunday attack.
The best and an enlightened ruler should be able to prevent such attacks, he added, pointing out that one should not be acting on personal interests amidst a such threat, but on the interests of people.
The Leader of Opposition also said that his aim is to implement a program beyond Covid-19 in the adaptation of democratic principles of good governance introduced by the 19A, catering to the implementation of a 19+ system with which Checks and Balances would be introduced instead of making the President or the Prime Minister a bogey.
