SJB MP Kumara Welgama reminisces that he has been warning from the beginning that the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is preparing themselves to accomplish an authoritarian president.
He reminded that the 19th Amendment to Constitution was passed in Parliament with a majority's vote, saying, "Why the 20th is necessary? We all voted for the 19th. Now they are attempting to seize the power of Parliament to be handed over to the President."
"Not even the Constitution adapted by J.R. Jayawardena had such content. His Constitution had lesser powers," Welgama stressed.
The SJB MP alleged that the ruling party is preparing to vest the President with the full authoritarian power to govern the country, warning that people of foreign roots would be resided in Parliament in a matter of years.
"I warned from the beginning that they are going to establish an authoritarian regime, or a president. I am saying the same thing now," he added, speaking at a SJB party meeting yesterday (21).
