The priority rule introduced to traffic lane rules in four main roads entering Colombo will be strictly enforced from today onwards, Police said.
The new traffic program was initiated on the 14th and was held as a rehearsal throughout the past week.
The traffic lane rules will stand in effect from 6 am to 9 pm and from 4 pm to 8 pm.
During the period, buses will only be allowed on the left lane, while motorcycles and three-wheelers will also be restricted to the same lane.
Nevertheless, motorcycles and three-wheelers will also be allowed to use the second lane on the left side of four-lane roads.
Police said although they have previously decided to impose fines and legal actions agianst those who violate the lane rules, these would not be imposed for another week. Meanwhile, violaters are required to attend traffic law awareness classes, they added.
A special program has been implemented to inspect whether the traffic laws are properly being enforced and CCTV and drone cameras are also being utilised for this purpose, Police further revealed.
