Police have decided to enforce the law against drivers and cyclists who act in violation of the lane rules from tomorrow (17).

For the third day in a row, the test was carried out and today it was focused on on motorcycles and threewheel drivers.

Speaking to the media, SSP Director of Traffic Control and Road Safety Indika Hapugoda, who was present at the occasion, said that the new fine sheet issued from January 15, 2018 is a violation of the lane rules as a fine could be imposed instead of a case under 33 lane laws. Because a fine can be imposed instead of a case under the existing lane law, the law drivers and cyclists violating the traffic rules will be fined up to Rs.2000.

Mr. Hapugoda said that the media has been informed about the lane rules for about two weeks and the lane rules were tested on last Monday, Tuesday and today.

Mr. Hapugoda said that Air Force drone cameras have also been used to identify congested areas and drivers violating traffic rules. The test was successful and the selected roads on Sri Jayawardenapura Road, Base Line Road, High Level Road and Galle Road were inspected for driving under the lane rules during the three days.

About 1500 police officers and 200 women officers have been deployed for this purpose. Today, the Army Police Unit has also assisted.
