The warrant issued for the arrest of five persons including Mayor of Kurunegala Thushara Sanjeewa Witharana over the demolition of the controversial building recognised for its archaeological value, namely King Buwaneka's Palace, has been suspended by the Court of Appeal until August 24.
The Appeal Court issused this order after giving consideration to the writ petition lodged by Sanjeewa seeking revocation of the arrest warrant.
Sanjeewa, the prime suspect, stressed in his writ that the media sensationalisation and a number of political interpretations to the incident depicted a wrong picture before the public.
The Police Inspector of Kurunegala Police HQs, the OIC of Kurunegala Special Invsetigation Unit, the Attorney General, the Commissioner General of Archaeology Prof. Senarath Dissanayake and the Kurunegala Magistrate were cited as respondents to the writ.
The Kurunegala Magistrate had ordered the arrest of the five suspects including the Mayor, after which the warrant was extended until August 13.
A restrain order barring the suspects from leaving country had also been issued by the Magistrate.
