The longest serving UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe will retire from politics after being a parliamentarian for over 43 years.

He had informed the UNP Working Committee about his decision today. It is unknown if he is retiring immediately or at the end of the year. Ranil Wickramasinghe had decided to retire from politics after the defeat of the UNP Presidential Candidate in 2019. However had decided to continue on the request of certain parliamentarians till the end of the year.

Ranil Wickramarasinghe has told his party sources that he had decided not to contest the 2020 General Elections but support the party candidates. However. since several requests were made for him to contest he had agreed. If not the rest of the district candidates would have opted out.

Further he had said We agreed for Sajith Premadasa to be the Prime Ministerial Candidate. Unfortunately both sides took positions and both sides payed the price of losing. I had no intention of being the prime minister candidate. The UNP never expected to be defeated so badly. The highest number of votes being rejected as much as 5% was at the 2020 General Election.

Some call it a silent protest.  Four candidates are vying for the Party leader’s job.
