Army Intelligence yesterday (08) arrested a consignment of turmeric and cardamom smuggled from India to Sri Lanka by sea.

On a tip-off received by the Army Intelligence, a search operation was carried out in the Anawasala area in Kalpitiya and nearly 500 kilograms of turmeric and cardamom valued at around one crore were seized.

The owner of the fishing vessel that brought the consignment of turmeric and cardamom from India has also been arrested and search operations are underway to find the other two fishermen aboard the vessel.

According to a policy decision of the new government, the importation of turmeric has been completely banned. Due to this tumeric rackets have also sprung up as turmeric has become more expensive.
