Co-cabinet spokesman Bandula Gunawardena says that ministers have requested another two weeks to study the final report of the committee appointed to study the MCC deal.
Although some ministers have studied the report and made their recommendations, a majority of ministers have said at the Cabinet meeting yesterday that more time is needed to study the case.
Accordingly, President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has agreed to give the cabinet another two weeks to study the report.
He said this at a press briefing held at the Government Information Department today.
Many ministers representing the current government stated during the last presidential election that the MCC deal would be torn apart after Gotabhaya Rajapaksa became president. They urged the people to vote for Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa's victory.
However, after the Presidential election, a committee headed by Professor Lalithsiri Gunaruwan was appointed to look into the matter. The final report of the committee was handed over to the President recently. The President then called on the Cabinet of Ministers to make written recommendations on the report.
