The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) the governing party is alleging that the Election Commission is serving the Opposition. General Election contender of SLPP Shehan Semasinghe has said that the public has lost confidence in the Election Commission in the present.
"Our people have had confidence with the Election Commission. But given consideration to how the Commission was being operated throughout the last four years, the faith was slowly being faded away.
We kept our faith in the Commission's Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya in particular as a person, we recognized him as a citizen who had always advocated for the country and the nation. But we witness that the public is speaking with disappointment over his image now.
Now the Election Commission is suggesting that it would be needing a period of 9 - 11 weeks for the preparation of an election, when the Health Sectors provide them with guidelines. The Election that was originally proclaimed for April 25 was postponed till June 20 considering the then health situation. If the Election Commission is attempting not to hold the Election for another three months, if the Opposition led by the United National Party and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya continues to protest over the conduction of the Election and if they consulted the Court in this regard, the reasoning by the Election Commission is quite obvious that they are serving according to the will of the Opposition," he said, speaking to a press briefing held by the SLPP yesterday (22).
