Senior Deputy Solicitor General Justice Sobhitha Rajakaruna has assumed duties as a Judge of Court of Appeal.
He was sworn in as a Judge of Court of Appeal on February 26, 2020 before President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and welcomed by the Court of Appeal on March 10, 2020.
Graduated from Law College in 1992, Justice Rajakaruna completed his masters LLM at the University of Colombo in 2008 followed by many foreign training programs he was enrolled for including Commercial Law (1999) and Advanced Commercial Law (2014) at the National University of Singapore, certified for Adjudication (2012) at Kuala Lampur Regional Centre for Arbitration, Malaysia, Professional Development (2017) at the Deakin University, Melbourne and Strategic Management Policy (2018), University of Georgia, USA.
He executed duties as a state counsel in administration and a senior state counsel in administration in the time between 2002 and 2011 and served as the Deputy Solicitor General at the Attorney General's Department from February 2016 to April 2018.
Prior to holding post as senior Deputy Solicitor General, Justice Rajakaruna served at the Attorney General's Department in various capacities since 1993. He was enrolled as an attorney-at-law at the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka on June 10, 1993.
Justice Rajakaruna also served as a legal consultant to semi government institutions and acted as representative to the Attorney General in many local and international legal forums exercising excellence of legal advocacy throughout time, whilst contributing to many ongoing trials pertaining to commercial contracts, labour disputes, land disputes, state land, arbitration matters and etc. at the Supreme Court, the Court-of Appeal, the Civil Appellate High Court, the Commercial High Court, the Provincial High Courts and District Courts.
Currently serving as a Member of the working group / steering committee to study Nuclear Power options in Sri Lanka, Rajakaruna has a sound background in atomic energy law.
Sobhitha Rajakaruna is an old boy from Nalanda College, Colombo and also was the Head Prefect in 1985/86.
