Cabinet approval has been granted to appoint foreign diplomats, high commissioners and all other diplomatic appointees to the President.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has presented the relevant Cabinet Memorandum to the Cabinet this year.
Although the President had the power to appoint ambassadors, high commissioners and other key posts
before, the Cabinet too had the power to appoint other positions to embassies and high commissions.
The Cabinet has agreed to transfer those powers to the President. Accordingly, the President has the power to appoint all posts with the assistance of the Ministry of External Affairs.
