Minister of Power and Energy Mahinda Amaraweera states that the construction of the LNG power station at Kerawalapitiya was supposed to be completed in 2016 but the project was hampered for four years due to inefficiency of the previous government. The Minister pointed out that if this power plant was built in a timely manner, 300 MW would be added to the National Grid.
The cabinet paper presented to the Cabinet last week has been approved and the construction of the LNG plant will commence this year.
The Minister pointed out that the demand for electricity has increased by 27% in the last five years but that electricity generation has not even increased by 2%. Amaraweera says that the political leadership that failed to remedy this situation had to buy electricity units at higher prices.
The Minister pointed out that the CEB is in a serious financial crisis due to the additional cost incurred. Amaraweera emphasized that steps have already been taken to build another 5 Power plants in the country in this year.
