The United National Party will never be able to play the role of the opposition, says Attorney General of the Left Front Lal Wijenayake.

Attorney at Law Lal Wijenayake said this while addressing the Kandy District National Conference of Jathika Janabalawegaya held at Kundasale yesterday (23).

JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake presided the event and over the launch of the Jathika Janabalawegaya's list of candidates for the upcoming general election for the Kandy district.

He further stated that although the present government has resorted to unprecedented pressure on the judiciary to deprive the independence of the judiciary, the role of the opposition will not be fulfilled.

The past three months have created a grave danger to the country. However, the UNP will not oppose it. They do not have the ability or understanding to stand up for the people and play the role of the opposition.

There is a situation today where the Attorney General advises the arrest of judges as never seen before. It is evident that the decision to arrest the judges gives an indirect message that the judges who make decisions against the government are being suppressed.

Transfers have already been given to the police officers who are conducting investigations into the massive financial scandals in the government. The President stated at the Independence Day celebrations that the Judiciary and the Legislature should not interfere in our program.

The judiciary has the right to object if the president or any person acts in violation of the law. The judiciary is the only institution that can help the people against injustice and oppression they face. It is a very dangerous situation if the President who exercises executive power interferes with the judiciary in some way.

Most people do not understand its dangerousness at the outset. Udayanga Weeratunga, the main accused in the aviation deal, was arrested and released on bail because he is a relative of Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The suspect will not be granted bail if he misuses public property valued at more than Rs.25000. He should be remanded until the case is over. An Assistant Superintendent of Police certifying that the misappropriated public property is worth more than Rs.25000 should be produced to the court.

However, Udayanga Weeratunga has not submitted such a certificate in the airline deal. Police have stated that they are not opposed to granting bail. The judge has questioned as to why there was no procedure in this case like the other cases.

The judge refused to release Udayanga Weeratunga on bail. Upon inquiry by the police officer, the officer stated in court that he was unaware of the case and that the officer who carried out the investigation had been transferred to the Negombo police station.

In such instances it is evident that the government is not acting under the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary.

A powerful people's force must emerge to prevent these. The opposition does not play their role. During the last administration, the Opposition was not the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime but the JVP.

In categorizing parliamentarian activity JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake was proved to be the most Realist and progressive person.

Attorney at Law Lal Wijenayake further stated that Mr. Sajith Premadasa and Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa were below the 1st 100 in this category.
