UNP long-running leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to reinstate Mr. Sajith Premadasa as the party's deputy leader, the post Premadasa gave resignation to in the presidential defeat last year.
Meanwhile, all posts vacant in the party, including the vacant working committee memberships, would be filled by next Monday (27), reports said.
The Sajith Faction requested to hold a voting in the working committee in order to solve the leadership crisis in the party, however, the party leadership strongly viewed otherwise, according to reports.
As of this moment, many seats in the working committee are vacant in the absence of its former members, favouring Mr. Premadasa a considerable level of power. Therefore, it is presumable that the UNP leadership intends to appoint a pool of members weakening Premadasa's power in the committee.
The appointment of working committee members would be carried out under the purview of advisory board comprising Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa, Vice Leader Ravi Karunanayake, National Organizer Naveen Dissanayake and Secretary General Akila Viraj Kariyawasam. Nevertheless, it is said that the party leader alone has more power on the matter.
