Thirteen defendants including former Navy media spokesman D.K.P. Dasanayake to the case of abduction and disappearance of 13 youths for extortion have been granted bail by the three member Special High Court today (24).
This was as the case was taken up before the Bench comprising Justices Champa Janaki Rajaratne, Amal Ranaraja and Navaratne Marasinghe.
Meanwhile, former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda who did not appear for the hearing has been summoned again by the Bench.
The thirteen defendants to the case have been given the indictments with a cash bail of Rs. 5 lakhs and two sureties of Rs. 25 lakhs each.
Additional Solicitor General of State Sarath Jayamanna appearing before the Court stated that the officer in charge of Welikada Police has not submitted a report on summoning the former navy commander for hearing, after which the Court issued summons.
The case was filed by the Attorney General against the defendants under 678 indictments on the charges of abducting 11 youths on six occasions in Kotahena and its suburbs during the period between August 25, 2008 and March 21, 2009.
