Former sports minister MP Harin Fernando says he has no personal grudge with Mr. Thilanga Sumathipala or any official attached sports clubs.
However, due to the new rules and regulations adopted in his tenure as the sports minister regarding the eligibility of the positions in sports clubs, Sumathipala and a group of other people are in utter animosity, Fernando divulged.
The former sports minister made these observations speaking at a press conference held yesterday (07) to elaborate on several cases lodged against him by Mr. Thilanga Sumathipala and Chandika Hathurusinghe.
Rules preventing sports clubs from being involved in bookie business were complied with the standards of international sports associations including the International Cricket Association, Fernando said, adding that it did not make Sumathipala an isolated target.
The present government can amend the rules if they view that the bookie owners do not have any problem holding the posts of sports associations, he added.
Every case against him, including one lodged by who goes by the name Sanath Jayasundara, was lodged after November 16th, MP Harin Fernando said, adding that it is very apparent who is behind them all.
Fernando viewed that Sanath Jayasundara had revealed that he was trying to bribe him because he had suspected his attempt was a trap. Otherwise, people could have thought that it was wrongdoing, he added.
