Leader of United National Party Ranil Wickremesinghe has raised attention for a constitutional amendment in the party, sources said. Accordingly, the amendment would account for the powers vested with the party's leader, their duties and responsibilities, tenure etc.
The UNP leader has informed the legal unit of the party to elaborate him on the necessary amendments to be met.
According to the existing constitution of the party, the leader is elected for a six-year period, with no provisions added to remove them without tendering willful resignation. Given the absence to certain elements important for the constitution, the party leadership backed by senior's consultation has decided to proceed for an amendment, according to sources.
The prevailing leadership crisis in the UNP should immediately meet closure and solution, its members urged, pointing out that the party leadership is being oscillated between Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe and Mr. Sajith Premadasa.
Nevertheless, a committee has also been appointed in this regard and the faction backing Mr. Premadasa is making a huge influence on putting him on front.
