In the wake of record breaking presidential election result and the political turnover that followed, Matale Municipal Council stands signature to the element among others.
Although the United National Party won the the Matale Municipal Council in the last provincial election, it could not secure the majority. However, the UNP did secure governing power by tying with the member selected from the Lanka Labour Congress. Daljith Aluwihare of the UNP was appointed as Mayor to Matale Municipal Council.
Sandanam Prakash from Lanka Labour Congress was appointed as Deputy Mayor.
Upon the political turnover of the national stream, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna is eyeing to gain power of the Matale Municipal Council, therefore, a conflict between the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor has emerged. This is being demonstrated even in public platform.
Deputy Mayor Sandanam Prakash has recently filed a list of charges against Mayor of the Central Province Governor Lalith Udugama and handed over to Mr. Gamage.
Meanwhile, Aluvihare has handed over a file to the Governor today (11) regarding the alleged irregularities committed by the Deputy Mayor, including the provision of unauthorized constructions in Matale.
The Governor in response has said that the two parties have leveled against each other, pointing out that an unbiased formal inquiry would be conducted in this regard.
Aluwihare said that he has not committed any irregularity or act of corruption, insisting to continue with the inquiry.
Accordingly, these local politicians are battling against each other to clear out their names from the allegations leveled against them, aside from serving the people.
