The letter of resignation tendered by chairman of Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has been rejected by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, pointing out that the letter cannot be accepted due to several points.
The President in particular viewed that Deshapriya should remain in the post of chairman to Election Commission due to the upcoming general election. There are propositions tabled to make several amendments in the election laws, the President reminded, adding that the current chairman needs to continue work in order to get these amendments passed.
The President's decision has been forwarded to the Election Commission through the President's Secretary yesterday (09), reports said.
Deshapriya during the presidential election had said that although he has decided to resign from the post of Chairman of Election Commission, he has one more year of service, and thereby would remain as a member of the commission.
Deshapriya was appreciated for his unbiased service during the elections, whilst a majority viewed that he should further remain in the post of Chairman of Election Commission.
