Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe states that the policy of devolution of power within a unitary country while preserving territorial integrity is the official policy of the UNP and that it is stated in the manifesto presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa, Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing a meeting with university lecturers said today (08).
Pointing out that they are devoted to providing a political solution for people in the North, Wickremesinghe said that the SLPP, or any other party, would not need to be afraid of it.
Propositions tabled by former presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa, Chandrika Bandaranaike and R. Premadasa would also be taken into attention over preparation of power devolution, the Prime Minister added. If anyone is afraid of them considering the Rajapaksa's policies over the matter, might it imply that his propositions were harmful to the country as well, he questioned.
Wickremesinghe emphasized that efforts had been made over the previous five years to build a free society, and Mr. Sajith Premadasa should be elected president if it needs continuation. If not, there could be a dictatorial regime that deprives people's freedom under the guise of national security, he added.
A special conversation centering progress of higher education and its sustainability between the university lecturers and the premier has also taken place in the event.
