Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka yesterday (18) issued a highly controversial revelation of former Army Lt. Col. Gotabaya Rajapaksa's brutal treatment of soldiers and his resignation.
"Gotabaya Rajapaksa has made a world record now, as the only army official who was in 4 regimes. He had a very bitter experience in Sinha Regime. I am saying this because he is fond of speaking of human rights and soldiers' welfare.
A soldier passed out with a pain in his chest in a rough forested area called 'Sudukanda' in Polonnaruwa. He told the other soldiers to drag him on the ground. He walked past the soldier hitting him by foot. Moments after, the soldier died.
Then the soldiers surrounded him and attacked him. He fled away. He did not report for duty for a month. He stayed in his home at Nugegoda. Then soldiers sought him in his home and attacked him. He never came back to Sinha Regime afterwards.
Lt. Col. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who today is contesting against us, receives a lieutenant colonel's pension. Because he completed his 20 years in the military. But after the twenty years, he never reported back for duty. He retired from Army over claimed personal reasons. Given what had happened in the battlefield, the then Deputy Defense Minister, Ranjan Wijeratne, decided to bring Gotabaya Rajapaksa before a court martial. According to information we received, Gotabaya Rajapaksa and then MP Mahinda Rajapaksa had visited Ranjan Wijeratne, fell on their knees before him and pleaded not to produce him before the Court Martial. They had asked him for his resignation instead. General Ranjan Wijeratne had accepted his request. Because he is ashamed of what he had done, now he says he resigned over personal reasons," Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka said.
Fonseka also emphasized that he was not given orders by Gotabaya Rajapaksa as some in the Pohottu Party claim and that all the war plans were prepared by him but a Secretary to the Ministry is not authorized to do it.
