President takes neutral stance in upcoming polls allowing SLFP to support Gotabaya
In another extraordinary political move, President Maithripala Sirisena has decided to shed his affiliations with Sri Lanka Freedom party temporarily becoming neutral till the conclusion of presidential elections and allowing SLFP faction to support SLPP candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
President Sirisena has stepped down from the chairmanship of the SLFP and appointed Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa as the Acting Chairman of the Party (SLFP), a a senior SLFP member said adding that This appointment will be in effect until the end of the Presidential Election 2019,
Prof. Piyadasa is the senior Deputy Chairman of the SLFP and he has been entrusted with the task of directing the party during the election period.
The SLFP will conduct their election campaign supporting Gotabaya Rajapaksa without getting on to the SLPP election stage as their support for presidential hopeful Gotabaya Rajapaksa, not Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.
SLFP MPs Duminda Dissanayake and Weerakumra Dissanayake will get on to the stage of SLPP’s maiden presidential election rally to be held in Anuradhapura these afternoon, party sources said.
However this decision has not been conveyed to SLFP Central committee and around 160 party organizers and district leaders countrywide creating confusion and dilemma among almost all SLFP frontliners.
The SLFP had postponed declaring the decision concerning its position on the Presidential Election 2019 on several occasions.
On October 6th, the Central Committee of SLFP stated that President Maithripala Sirisena would make the decision on the party’s position on the Presidential Election 2019.
However with this latest unorthodox political move of President Maithripala Sirisena to be neutral in the run up to presidential elections has shocked the nation sending ripples among the SLPP and UNP supporters.
