Plan to present Sarath Weerasekara to split Mahesh Senanayake’s Sinhala votes

In light of splitting votes tendered for presidential nominee former Army Commander Mahesh Senanayake from Jathika Janatha Party, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is giving attention to present former head of Civil Defence Force and former parliamentarian Sarath Weerasekara, who is a founding member of Gotabaya Rajapaksa's political movement, sources said.

Sarath Weerasekera had already obtained the parliamentary certificate required to contest as a candidate a few days ago.

Size estimations revealed that Mahesh Senanayake's political movement will have a significant impact on the SLPP's election campaign which is solely based on Sinhala votes.

While this may seem ridiculous at first glance, the massive attacks launched by SLPP activists targeting Mahesh Senanayake indicate that they are taking this seriously.

Nevertheless, a final decision on the matter would be taken within the next two hours, according to sources.
