Speaker Karu Jayasuriya had issued an announcement that he can contest the next presidential election to abolish the executive presidency.
However, the Speaker had included a clause that all parties must agree to accept his condition and did not issue a direct decision. We believe some explanation in this regard should be made.
Dear Mr. Karu Jayasuriya,
We are not going to repeat, because you have a better understanding of the problems that the Sri Lankan society is facing as a result of the Executive Presidency and how it threatens democracy.
For the first time in its history, the United National Party (UNP), which created the executive presidency in the first place, is now considering a policy to abolish it. Similarly, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), which has held the post for the longest period of 25 years, since the creation of the 1978 Executive Presidency, has agreed to abolish it. Unlike previous oral agreements, they are working on it.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) from the beginning without hesitation are ready to abolish the executive presidency. Following the October 26 crisis in 2018, even a public opinion has come to the fore that such post is dangerous and should be wiped out. If this historic moment is missed, there is a danger that it may never happen again for decades.
True, we have a history where the promise to abolish the executive presidency has come to the fore amid many previous presidential elections and turned into a false promise. But that happened because the pseudo-brash political figures who had no intention of retiring from politics, hoping to elevate the post of executive presidency in the highest bid, had ruled the country over and over again. Because power was seized by those who were not wiling to quit the executive presidency once tasted.
But the country knows you are not one of them. You will be 79 to the 29th of this month. You have no greed over a presidency steered by a crutch or a wheelchair. Your political career is a testament to how much you have trained yourself to embrace the truth about life. How well you can cope with the loss was well-reflected in the untimely demise of your daughter.
Dear Karu Jayasuriya sir,
You are the only person in Sri Lankan politics who can rely on the abolition of the Executive Presidency. You are also the only Sri Lankan politician who can gather the support of those who are willing to join this battle, by bringing all the parties together.
So you need to understand the level of historical responsibility that is placed on your back. The only person who can do this is you.
Political fronts are not spontaneous. It is imperative that the society has its own motivation as well as a leadership that can lead the fight, manage it, and lead it to victory. History has led to some struggles until such a leadership arrives.
This is one of those moments.
This cannot be done to please all parties. In order to please everyone, an ice cream giveaway can be arranged instead of politics. Politicians in particular cannot be pleasurable and trying to please them would be a gamble with the country's future.
Therefore, for the benefit of the majority, you should enter the battle by forgetting the uproar of a group of conspirators. Your unbreakable spine should be showed up at the moment.
If certain decisions are not made at the right time in history, then it will have to suffer for generations to come. If you too aside by opening the door to either a murderer or an idiot at the moment, you too will be held accountable for the fate of your grandchildren and granddaughters.
If you do not stand up today and take up this fight on behalf of the 20 million people of the country, you will lose all the honors you have earned in your political career in the future. The victories you achieved for the country - the Right to Information Act, defeating the October Coup - will be long forgotten.
The loss will be to the whole country, the people, the future!
This moment is therefore crucial. Your decision for the country is extremely crucial. Whether you join history as a leader who saved the country from the curse of the executive presidency by taking the right decision at the right time, in spite of all these possibilities or look away and open up portal to an eternal torment is up to you!
