Four soldiers, including a brigadier, were indicted by the Gampaha High Court on Wednesday (11) for allegedly shooting and killing three people, including two school children, and injuring 45 persons, at a demonstration demanding water held by the villagers of Rathupaswala at Weliweriya city.

The Attorney General has filed 94 indictments under the Criminal Procedure Code against three soldiers of team Brigadier Deshapriya Gunawardena Sanema, who had given the command to the army group that shot at the civilians .

At the request of the Attorney General, the Chief Justice has appointed a three-member High Court panel comprising Menaka Wijesundara (Chairman) Nimal Ranaweera and Nishantha Hapuarachchi.

However, it is noteworthy that only a few army personnel have been prosecuted against the crime without making any provision against the then Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who had summoned the army to shoot at unarmed civilians in the first place.
