Based on agreement made during meeting held on Tuesday (10) between Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sajith Premadasa to resolve the issue regarding the nomination of the UNP Presidential Candidate, another meeting on Wednesday (11) was held at the residence of Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne, sources said.
Along with Rajitha Senaratne were rebel leader of the Sajith Faction, Malik Samarawickrama, and Mangala Samaraweera.
Papers consisted of public survey reports and statistics carried out by Sajith Faction have been handed over to Senaratne by Malik Samrawickrama.
Giving headstart to the meeting, Minister Mangala Samaraweera said that although he too in 2018 had agreed that Ranil Wickremesinghe would be the ideal candidate the political reality has changed over the period, upon which many people in grassroot level demand a different leader.
"Because we always reach the people in grassroot level, we come to understand who're they asking for. This is why we're favouring Sajith.
"What's more dangerous is that we have no time for experimenting. If we're about to lose, we'll lose to a 'Terminator'. So, we'll have to hit the trump with one-shot no mistakes.
We all would make a review and take decision to nominate Sajith by the weekend," Samaraweera has said.
In response, Minister Senaratne has said, "It's not a problem if Sajith comes alone. The real problem is he's being used by many other parties. If you know what I mean."
"Even you two had many tussles with those who tend to use Sajith over the period, remember? And yet you've now all formed together.
Sajith isn't an independent character. He's being used because he's too kind. How can one lead a country like that? You do understand who I'm talking about right? This is the biggest problem we have," Senaratne has further commented.
Neither Malik Samarawickreme nor Mangala Samaraweera made response afterwards, the sources claimed.
The first round of discussions therewith have ended following lunch, sources further said.
The two parties have agreed to conduct meeting thereafter on a daily basis, according to sources.
